Open Saturday, Sunday & Public Holidays 1pm to 3pm
(Other times by appointment)

Cobham Hall - Home of Solomon Wiseman

Cobham Hall was built in 1826 by convict labourers, commissioned by Solomon Wiseman, as a home for himself and his second wife Sofia.
It was constructed of hand hewn Hawkesbury sandstone which is mostly still intact to this day.

The laborious job to hand pick redgum rafters can be seen throughout the roof structure. Lime made from crushed, cooked oyster shells can be seen in the mortar of the sandstone walls as well as the lime wash on the face of the walls and the plaster lining of the ceiling.

The home was later transformed into a hotel.

Farm Gate Trail

Hawkesbury Harvest
is a community association formed in the year 2000 by local farmers and people interested in food issues in Sydney. With the assistance of local, state and federal government funding, they created the first Farm Gate Trail to improve access to fresh food for consumers and direct sales of produce from farms. Since then, Hawkesbury Harvest has had two other agri-business and food projects, the Paddock-to-Plate, and Food and Wine Coordinator projects. Through these, Harvest has established farmers markets, open farm days, encouraged specialty food production, created networks and alternative market channels for farmers, and a provedoring service.

Macquarie Trail

Major-General Lachlan Macquarie was governor of NSW from January 1810 until December 1821. Part of Macquarie's brief was to take measures to prevent further losses of food stores, buildings and possessions caused by devastating floods which had plagued the Hawkesbury since settlement in 1794. He had been given the power to 'lay out Townships of a convenient size and extent.'

Macquarie established the five townships of Windsor, Richmond, Wilberforce, Pitt Town and Castlereagh on the high ground in various parts of the district.

This self-drive tour, one of many options for exploring the Hawkesbury - through the eyes of Governor Macquarie, commences at the Hawkesbury Visitor Information Centre, Clarendon. Take time to explore the history and character of each township together with the range of opportunities they offer.
